Remembering a changed man and how he chose to spend himself
With thanks to Lars Brownworth—for introducing us to David Engel—during his chapel talk at The Stony Brook School on December 5, 2006

I remember David
Way back to the seventh grade
Despite the stupid things we did
How David seemed so unafraid

And I remember David
When we met again eight years away
He rode up to the Starbucks
And he had something new to say

And I still remember David
What he did with all that time that passed
And I still remember David
How he spent himself on things that last
and now he’s gone

I remember David
The day he locked the teacher up
And when he pushed me through a window
And how everything was “radical”

And I remember David
When he told me how life fell apart
How he had to grow up so fast
Cause his life had ended up so hard

And I still remember David
How he changed his life to something true
And I still remember David
How he spent himself to make things new

So many years behind us two
The different paths our lives had taken
Out of the darkness he had known
He said it’s not too late to seek a newer world—

And I still remember David
What he did with all that time that passed
And I still remember David
How he spent himself on things that last

And I still remember David
How he changed his life to something true
And I still remember David
How he spent himself to make things new
and now he’s gone
